Age in Place Specialists
According to AARP, almost 90 percent of seniors want to stay in their own homes as they age. This is called aging in place. Even if they begin to need day-to-day assistance or ongoing health care during retirement, 82 percent would prefer to stay in their homes. Only nine percent express a preference for moving to a facility where care is provided, and just four percent would prefer to move to a relative’s home.
Our decision to become Age in Place specialists was a personal one. It began when our 90-year-old grandmother, who was living alone, fell and was forced to sit on her kitchen floor overnight. She ended up with a four-month hospital and rehab stay.
At that time, we were told she could go home with a caregiver or be converted to a permanent long-term care situation—an assisted living or nursing home. Of course she wanted to go home! Doesn’t everyone?
Long-term care in an assisted living or nursing home starts at about $6,000 per month. The average stay is about three-and-a-half years. Do the math. Lots of families cannot afford that. They use up their loved one’s estate, and then hopefully Medicaid kicks in. A lot of family wealth vanishes because proper planning does not happen in advance.
We had to make some decisions, and make them in a hurry. We decided to take Gammy home and have around-the-clock care for her.
Plan Ahead for Your Family
Many families are making these decisions every day. They are not easy, they’re not fun, and can be very expensive.
Age-in-place modifications make it easier and safer for people to live in their existing home. The vast majority of people would rather live in the home they love than move to an assisted living or other facility.
People tend to be happier at home. That was true in our family. If you need help planning for your family, we’re here to help.
